Do you love coffee? Chances are if you do, you know how this bold beverage has a bad habit of leaving behind dark stains on your teeth. Thankfully, if you have deep discoloration, you can easily improve the appearance of your smile with the help of veneers. They fit over your healthy teeth to create a whiter, brighter, and in some cases, more evenly spaced smile. But can your daily cup of joe stain them like it did your untreated teeth? Here’s what you need to know before you pour that espresso!
Veneers and Stains
Unlike your real teeth, porcelain veneers are not porous, so they are very difficult to stain. If your veneers are made of composite resin, however, the same does not usually hold true. Composite resin is much more porous than porcelain, and thus could trap stains from things like dark foods, drinks, and cigarettes.
If you have temporary veneers while you wait for your permanent set to be ready, be extra careful with what you eat and drink, as they can be stained or broken quite easily.
How to Prevent Stains with Veneers
The good news about veneers is that just because you can stain them if you’re not careful doesn’t mean that you must. In fact, with a little care and consideration, you can keep them looking as white and bright as the day you got them. Here’s how:
- If you eat or drink anything that could cause stains to a white shirt, they can stain your teeth too. Thus, alternate bites or sips with water to help keep your teeth clean.
- Brush and floss after each meal.
- Visit your dentist twice a year for your semi-annual exam and cleaning.
Remember, your new veneers can vastly improve the appearance of your teeth, but in order to keep them looking their best, you’ll need to take good care of them by avoiding staining foods, brushing and flossing them regularly, and visiting your dentist twice a year for your regular checkups.
